Hopping with the art hipsters

A little art, a little food, a little music in the open air. Twice a month the merchants and business leaders of the Columbus Short North area throw open their doors and take the party out into the streets.

The well-known Gallery Hop flourishes the first Saturday of every month. Anywhere from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand people can be found strolling the streets, enjoying live music, food, street performers and the convenience of gallery after gallery after gallery. But the fun continues throughout the month. Now, every third Saturday of the month, Columbus residents can keep that festive attitude rolling with Saturday Night Out. So many galleries, so few Saturdays!

Addressing lesbian health issues

substance abuse and ways of improving access to gynecological services, respectively. In addition to enabling researchers who are doing necessary work, the LHF is committed to educating health care workers, educating lesbians about safe insemination techniques.

Well aware of discrimination which has allowed lesbian health concerns to be overlooked, Wurmbrand says that the LHF is concerned with representing cultural diversity in the research it chooses to fund, as well as on its board. When awarding grants, the LHF takes into account the target populations of the proposed studies, striving to support research that applies to all members of the lesbian community, not just white middle-class lesbians. The organization is willing to turn this critical eye on itself; its board is comprised of medical professionals across the country, in a variety of medical fields and from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds.

In the past, lesbian physicians who are members of the LHF have been the primary source for donations. Wurmbrand's wish list of accomplishments for her year as president includes increasing donations from other individuals and groups, including gay men. Regarding the opportunities for funding from the gay male community, Wurmbrand said, "I think we'll find a lot of gay men who will be generous." Since lesbians have supported gay men's issues for some time now, particularly for the last ten years, she hopes that gay men will be more than willing to add their voices and their money to this issue. In addition to contacting other supporters,

Wurmbrand would also like to see directed donations for administrative costs, which would enable some of the less moneyed members of the LHF to travel as needed.

Grants given since April of this year have ranged from $500 to $14,000. Wurmbrand explains that the amount of individual awards and the number of awards per funding cycle depend on the amount of money the LHF has been able to raise during the previous funding cycle. beyond funding individual projects, the organization tries to take advantage of major studies already in the works which do not explicitly include lesbians. For example, board members of the LHF convinced the National Institutes of Health, which was in the process of doing a study of 600,000 women, to include the question of sexual orientation in its research.

Like most nonprofit organizations trying to benefit minority populations, board members strive for inexpensive ways to get the most done for lesbians. To this end, members pay all of their own expenses in order to attend the LHF's twice-a-year meetings.

The Lesbian Health Fund is the daughter organization of the American Association of Physicians for Human Rights, which is a 501 (c)(3) organization. To find out more about the work that the Lesbian Health Fund is doing, or in applying for a grant, call 415255-4547. The LHF'appreciates donations of any amount. To donate, make check payable to the Lesbian Health Fund, and mail it c/o the Association of Physicians for Human Rights, 273 Church Street, San Francisco, CA 94114.
